Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT): Off the Record – College Prowler
Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT): Off the Record - College Prowler
Don t let the name fool you. The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is not just about fashion. The college is all about creativity, networking, career-oriented programs, business, and diversity. Here, real-world experiences are partnered with knowledgeable professors who have more information about the industry they are teaching than any textbook you will read. It shocks most, but not all FIT students are future fashion designers a lot are business and technology students. The college was founded in 1944 to prepare men and women for work in the fashion industry as it grew in size and scope over the years, so have the programs and degrees. FIT now offers over 35 degree programs, not only in fashion and its related fields, but also in other industries with New York City as their focal point. Students here prepare to meet business head-on, and a majority are involved in career preparing internships. Many prominent designers learned their craft here. The programs at FIT focus on art, design, and the business and technology industries. FIT is actually composed of several smaller schools art and design, business and technology, continuing and professional studies, graduate studies, and liberal arts. Many are unaware that FIT is a public school and that it receives both state and local funding. FIT holds membership in the State University of New York system, but it does not use the name to identify itself. When coming to this school, you need to step it up and focus hard. The weak will not survive here. FIT was the right choice for me. My goal for this book is to help you see if FIT fits you. Heather M. DiRubba, Author

I went to the see the "Seduction" exhibit at FIT today (no photography allowed). The fashions ranged from daring, sexy ensembles to subtly revealing clothes that merely allude to sensuality and romance. All I can say is WOW! Wish I could wear some of those fashions, especially the 6" stilleto heels with the studded gold straps!

Halston, Regny, Dior, and Gernreich are a few of the top designers represented in this exhibit which ranges from the 17th to 21st century.

So, if you’re in NYC, stop by the Fashion Institute of Technology and explore both the sensual and fun side of fashion. Show runs through June 16, 2009

Does anyone know who designed the first f…. me shoe?

This professor was out flying around when he stopped in to see what was here. He is from the FIT in Manhattan. We had a nice chat about working with students in SL. This is an example of the serendipitous occurrences that often take place in SL. He has recently begun using SL with his students at FIT.

The Nature of Technology: What It Is and How It Evolves
“More than any thing else technology creates our world. It creates our wealth, our economy, our very way of being,” says W. Brian Arthur. Yet, until now the major questions of technology have gone unanswered. Where do new technologies come from — how exactly does invention work? What constitutes innovation, and how is it achieved? Why are certain regions — Cambridge, England, in the 1920s and Silicon Valley today — hotbeds of innovation, while others languish? Does technology, like biological life, evolve? How do new industries, and the economy itself, emerge from technologies? In this groundbreaking work, pioneering technology thinker and economist W. Brian Arthur sets forth a boldly original way of thinking about technology that gives answers to these questions.
The Nature of Technology is an elegant and powerful theory of technology’s origins and evolution. It achieves for the progress of technology what Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions did for scientific progress. Arthur explains how transformative new technologies arise and how innovation really works. Conventional thinking ascribes the invention of technologies to “thinking outside the box,” or vaguely to genius or creativity, but Arthur shows that such explanations are inadequate. Rather, technologies are put together from pieces — themselves technologies — that already exist. Technologies therefore share common ancestries and combine, morph, and combine again to create further technologies. Technology evolves much as a coral reef builds itself from activities of small organisms — it creates itself from itself; all technologies are descended from earlier technologies.
Drawing on a wealth of examples, from historical inventions to the high-tech wonders of today, and writing in wonder fully engaging and clear prose, Arthur takes us on a mind-opening journey that will change the way we think about technology and how it structures our lives.
